What is
classical
Pilates?

Classical Pilates is the original movement system developed by Joseph H. Pilates, which he called Contrology — the complete science of control. Developed over decades of study in anatomy, gymnastics, martial arts, and rehabilitation, it is one of the most sophisticated and coherent movement systems ever created.

The word “classical” is critical. It means the method is taught as Joseph Pilates designed it — the original sequence of exercises, in their original order, with original progressions, on the apparatus he built for that purpose. Nothing removed because it’s difficult. Nothing substituted because it’s fashionable. The system is whole, or it isn’t the system.

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks.”

— Joseph Pilates, Return to Life Through Contrology, 1945

Classical Pilates is not what you find in most studios. The majority of what is marketed as “Pilates” today is a contemporary interpretation — exercises selected and reordered for mass appeal, taught on equipment designed for group classes, by instructors certified in a matter of weeks. It borrows the name. It is not the method.

At Endurance Pilates & Yoga, we teach the real thing. Every session is grounded in the complete classical system — using authentic Gratz apparatus, following the original progressions, and taught by an instructor whose training traces directly back to Joseph Pilates himself.

The equipment
is the method.

Joseph Pilates designed and built his own apparatus specifically for his method. Authentic Gratz equipment — built to his original specifications — is the only equipment on which classical Pilates can be fully and correctly taught. Endurance Pilates & Yoga is home to a complete Gratz apparatus, including every piece of equipment in the classical system. No other studio in Boston offers this.

01

The Reformer

The centerpiece of the classical system. A moving carriage on springs that provides both resistance and support — allowing the body to move through a full range of exercises that would be impossible on a mat. The Reformer trains the body in three dimensions, requiring and developing real functional strength.

02

The Cadillac

Joseph Pilates’ most versatile apparatus — a raised mat surrounded by a canopy of springs, bars, and straps. The Cadillac allows for the most nuanced and therapeutic work in the classical system, making it essential for rehabilitation, advanced training, and work with complex bodies.

03

The Wunda Chair

Deceptively demanding. The Chair trains balance, stability, and functional strength in ways the Reformer and Cadillac cannot — requiring the body to work against resistance in an upright, load-bearing position. It is among the most challenging apparatus in the system.

04

The Spine Corrector

An arc-shaped apparatus designed to open and articulate the spine with support. The Spine Corrector addresses the deep postural patterns that most movement practices never reach — creating genuine spinal mobility and resilience from the inside out.

05

The Ladder Barrel

A barrel-shaped apparatus with a ladder for handhold support, used for some of the most demanding stretching and strengthening work in the classical system. The Ladder Barrel develops the extreme flexibility and control that define advanced classical Pilates practice.

06

Mat Work

The original Pilates practice — 34 exercises on the mat that Joseph Pilates published in Return to Life Through Contrology in 1945. Mat work is the foundation of the classical system and remains among its most demanding expressions. Nothing between you and the floor. Every muscle working.

Six principles.
One system.

Joseph Pilates did not create a list of exercises. He created a philosophy of movement — governed by six principles that run through every exercise, every apparatus, every session. Understanding these principles is the difference between going through the motions and actually practicing Pilates.

01

Concentration

Every movement in classical Pilates demands your full mental attention. This is not passive exercise — it is an active conversation between your mind and your body. Pilates called this the “mindful approach to movement.” Concentration transforms exercise into practice.

02

Control

No movement in classical Pilates is accidental. Every joint, every muscle, every breath is under conscious control. This is why Pilates named his method Contrology — not because it is rigid, but because it demands and develops a quality of movement that only comes from mastery over the body.

03

Centering

All movement originates from the center — what Pilates called the “powerhouse”: the deep abdominals, the lower back, the hips, and the pelvic floor. Centering is not just a physical concept. It is the governing principle from which every other quality of movement flows.

04

Precision

Classical Pilates does not reward effort. It rewards accuracy. Every exercise has a correct form, a correct range, a correct intention — and partial credit does not exist. Precision is what separates classical Pilates from generalized fitness and what produces genuine structural change in the body.

05

Breath

In classical Pilates, breath is not an afterthought — it is a mechanism. Specific breathing patterns are prescribed for each exercise, designed to oxygenate the blood, activate the deep stabilizers, and coordinate the movement of the whole body. Proper breath is inseparable from proper practice.

06

Flow

Classical Pilates is not a series of disconnected exercises. It is a continuous, flowing sequence — where transitions between exercises are themselves exercises, and the momentum of one movement carries intelligently into the next. Flow is what makes the method feel like movement rather than work.

Classical purity.
Complete mastery.

Other classical studios in Boston exist. None of them are Julie Erickson. The distinction is not simply lineage — it is the breadth and depth of a movement education that spans 30+ years, multiple classical traditions, every major Pilates methodology, and certifications across personal training and group exercise.

A single classical lineage teaches you the choreography. Multiple classical lineages, combined with the biomechanical and anatomical knowledge of a certified personal trainer and 25-time marathon runner, teaches you the body. Julie doesn’t just know what the exercises are. She knows why they exist, what they demand of every body type, and — most critically — how to make sure every individual student actually feels and understands the work. That teaching gift is what 30 years builds.

I

Integrative knowledge

Classical training through Sari Mejia Santo, Daria Mejo Wiggins, Brooke Siler, and Cary Regan — plus Physical Mind Institute, Stott, Balanced Body, and PMA certifications — gives Julie a 360° understanding of the method that no single lineage provides.

A

Athletic intelligence

As a NASM and ACE certified personal trainer and 25-time marathon runner, Julie reads bodies that have been pushed hard — and knows precisely how classical Pilates addresses what endurance and strength training cannot.

H

Hands-on precision

Classical Pilates is a tactile practice. Julie’s instruction includes the hands-on cueing and correction that is fundamental to the method — and impossible in a group class setting. This is what makes the difference between understanding an exercise and actually feeling it.

P

Proven under pressure

Julie’s work with Boston Marathon bombing survivors — featured in the Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, and an HBO documentary — demonstrated what classical Pilates is capable of at its most demanding. She has worked with bodies that conventional rehabilitation could not reach.

Classical Pilates is for
serious bodies.

Endurance Athletes

Runners, cyclists, triathletes — who need the structural balance and core intelligence that endurance training alone cannot provide. Classical Pilates does what miles cannot.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Post-surgical bodies, chronic pain, injury rehabilitation — who need a practice that rebuilds from the inside out. The classical method meets every body exactly where it is.

I

Intelligent Movers

People who have tried everything and found it wanting. Who want to understand their body, not just use it. Who are looking for a practice with real intellectual depth.

L

Lifelong Practice Seekers

Those who understand that a body is a long-term project. Who want a practice they can build on for decades — that becomes more sophisticated and more rewarding over time.

A note of honesty

Classical Pilates is not for everyone — and it is not designed to be. If you are looking for a casual group fitness experience, a social class, or something you can do while distracted, there are many studios that will serve you well. Endurance Pilates & Yoga is for people who want to do the real work. If that is you, we are ready when you are.
